NYC ACC Holiday Pet Supply Drive

Help the holidays be warmer and brighter this season for animals in need!

In addition to canned pet food, the New York City Animal Care & Control  is accepting litter, toys, blankets and beds (and of course, they're not going to say no to a check).

So, as you wrap gifts for your pets this holiday, we at Barkzilla kindly ask you not to forget the animals that are waiting to find a family of their own. Whether you are able to participate in the ACC's Pet Supply Drive, or get involved with a local animal organization-- we're sure your gift will make the holidays special for some very deserving furry folks.

Visit the ACC's website to find out donation location specifics and other ways you can help.

Hot Guys + Baby Animals = Best Gift Ever

Seriously, what better way to ring in 2011 than with hot guys and baby animals? The folks behind the Hot Guys and Baby Animals 2011 Calendar have paired adorable, adoptable baby animals... and well, hot guys, to help raise money for the SF SPCA and other animal charities like the Bunny World Foundation and Forever Pet Rescue. Possibly the best combination ever since peanut butter and chocolate.

Each calendar is printed on 50% post-consumer recycled paper, and can be purchased directly from www.hotguysandbabyanimals.com.

Rain Rain, Go Away!

Just when we thought it was safe to put away the rain boots…

No joke, Sunday was like NYC Rainpocalypse all over again, which meant no playing outside for Paddy. Even though she hates booties, I think she secretly wishes for a pair of yellow galoshes à la the pooch on this adorable note card from Anthropologie. For real. Seriously, this is going up on our wall as a piece of fashion inspiration.

We spotted these cards over at Design Sponge on their Holiday 2010 Gift List for Pet Lovers-- if you have time, head on over and check out their other picks!

P.S. Oh, and you can also grab a set of these cards at Anthropologie - $18 for a pack of eight (2 of each of the 4 designs)!

Martha Stewart Chicken Coop in Action!

We recently swung by the newly opened NoHo Petsmart in NYC and were delighted to discover the full-range of Martha Stewart pet products in stock. Since Paddy had been such a good girl of late, we picked up the Martha Stewart Chicken Coop (which we had previously blogged about) as an early holiday present. Much to our pleasant surprise, it is as cute in-person as we had hoped! The house actually has crinkly material sewn into it which immediately caught Paddy's attention.

Though we stuffed the Chicken Coop with the three cute little chickies it came with, Paddy had a tough time getting them loose-- and fearing the destruction of the barn-- we freed one for her.

Big mistake. Sadly, the baby chick you see here was destroyed in less than five minutes (oh the horror), which leads us to believe that the Martha Stewart Chicken Coop was definitely not designed with fierce chewers in mind... in fact, we better go that squeaker from our Canine Tester....

Possibly a better pick for a pooch that plays more gently with their toys, we still dig the Chicken Coop and plan on stuffing it with other toys or treats in the future. Definitely a cute new puppy present or item for under the tree!

Pick up your Martha Stewart Chicken Coop from PetSmart for $14.99.

#ThursdayBling / @Juicy_Couture

It's Thursday, which means it's time for #ThursdayBling!

There's not much to say about this awesome piece of Fido-fancyness except:

1) It's for your dog
2) It's from Juicy Couture
3) What doggy wardrobe would be complete without it?

Pylones Bubbles Soap Dispenser

While skulking around SoHo for holiday gifts, we spied these colorful soap dispensers on the shelves at Pylones! We didn't see these online yet (they're available online in Europe), so stop by your local Pylones retailer or contact customer service for details.  Maybe they're officially a January launch? Apologies for the lack of info, but they were just too cute not to share!

Tanzanite #ThursdayBling!

This may come as a surprise, but is kind of hard to find tasteful dog bling...

While diamonds ARE a dog's best friend, sometimes it's nice to change it up a bit-- which is why this week's #ThursdayBling accessory features Tanzanite! This pretty blueish/purple stone is understated enough to be classy enough for every day wear, but also flashy enough for those more glam occasions. With four rows of Swarovski stones, it's definitely blinged out enough for the Barkistas!

A Phetching Find

Our friends over at Phetched turned us on to the hip, modern designs at Yep Yup. While our apartment decorating style is more country classic, the Sasha & Tasha Feeding Set immediately caught our eye (can you tell our favorite color is purple?). Each set includes two small bowls, a feeding pat, and a storage jar for treats or kibble. Better yet, all Feeding Sets are currently 40% (the small set is a steal at $53.40), so click your way over and check it out.

The Mommy Bus

We're not going to lie: when we first heard about the "Mommy Bus" pet carrier, we were a little bit skeptical. However, after checking out their video (seriously the song is catchy), and doing more research we might be sold. While most pet totes go the more traditional "bag" route, the Mommy Tote embraces the fact that if you cart your dog around in a bag, yes-- you are a pet chauffeur.

Designed with enough pockets and storage space to prevent the necessity of having to carry an additional bag (such a pain), even the cute little bus wheels are mini zippered pockets. In addition to two handles, it also has a larger shoulder strap, an interior safety strap and a removable/washable pad. This top loading bag also features a mesh "front windshield" that can be left open or closed, which honestly is what we loved most about the bag.

Well thought out and clearly designed for the pet owner who doesn't like to leave home without their furry friend, you can pick yours up directly from their site at www.mommybus.com for $95.99.

#ThursdayBling + Barkzilla = Sparkly Fun!

Everyone needs a little bling in their life, which is why we started #ThursdayBling with one of our awesome Twitter pals (@MissMarisol). The premise? Each week to get through the doldrums of Thursday, we'd wear something sparkly and fantastic and tweet each other pictures. While #ThursdayBling has not taken over the internet as a trending topic (YET), we've decided to bring it to Barkzilla!

This week's Thursday Bling is from one of our favorite accessory houses, Coach, and perfectly melds the themes of Thursday Bling and Barkzilla (i.e. pretty shiny things + dogs).

This gorgeous glittery key charm from Coach's Poppy Line is just screaming to be clipped to your leash to add a little sparkle on your daily walk.

Trimmed in leather, it comes with the necessary attachments to hook it on a leash. Pick yours up from your local Coach store or online at www.coach.com for $30.

Rescue Chocolates

Okay. So we all know that chocolate is strictly NFD: Not For Dogs. However, that doesn't mean that YOU eating chocolate can't be beneficial for dogs.

That's right-- Rescue Chocolate, a vegan chocolatier, has partnered with Pit Bull Rescue Center to help relieve the suffering of and prevent cruelty to pit bulls and pit bull mixes. This month, 100% of profits go to the rescue organization which also helps to take care of dogs in need and place pit bulls into loving homes. Founded in 2010, Rescue Chocolates are vegan and handcrafted using traditional Belgian techniques and packaged in eco-friendly materials. In addition to fun flavors like Peanut Butter Pit Bull, they've also got a number of other bars that help raise awareness about animal fostering (Foster-iffic Peppermint), adopting from shelters (Pick Me! Pepper), and even managing feral cat colonies (Mission Feral Fig).

With the holidays right around the corner, these are not only a great gift for the animal lover in your life, but also pets in need! To purchase your Rescue Chocolates, visit www.rescuechocolate.com, and eat more chocolate for a good cause!

Stuff We Love: Target's Holiday Dinner Plate

Each season, the Barkistas discover something they MUST have. Luckily for us, we were able to get our paws on our latest lust-- Target's Doggy Holiday Dinner Plate! Despite the un-helpfulness of Target's corporate team and lack of local Targets, our awesome friend Diane was kind enough to pick us Paddy up a plate on one of her Target runs.

Little did we know when we first spotted it in the pages of Food Network's November issue, there are actually three main dishes for your pooch to pick from: turkey, lobster and squirrel. Diane snagged us the adorable squirrel plate which also includes a stuffed potato, piece of corn, bread roll, and a kale-esque rope toy

What to destroy... I mean...devour first.... Hmm.
We were really delighted at the quality of all of the toys included, and while we don't think they're going to last long (listen, this is Paddy the Destroyer we're talking about here), they are super cute and for $9.99 the Holiday Dinner Plate is a pretty good deal.

A girl after our own heart-- Paddy decides to start with the starch!
Though availability seems to be limited with some Barkzilla readers reporting stock (or lack of stock) at their Targets, definitely try checking out your local store as the set is NOT available online (BOOO!). Also-- if anyone's spotted the lobster plate, we'd love to see pics!

Prima Dog's Snow Lodge

Okay, so the Barkistas may or may not have holiday on the brain already... (I blame the early arrival of Black Friday and the abundance of holiday-themed commercials on TV). Even though this year's early onslaught of festiveness, we're really not complaining as this is our favorite time of year! While we'd rather be out in the countryside eagerly awaiting the season's first flurry, we're sadly city bound until the end of December. But that is not going to stop us from decking out our 500 sq foot apartment with holiday cheer ASAP!

Check out this adorable bed Snow Lodge Bed from Prima Dog. Not only is it oh-so-holly-jolly with it's little evergreen and snow covered eaves, but it also features ground-breaking nanotechnology from Japan! Though we don't understand how it works, the nanotechnology fabric decomposes bacteria, virus, smells and helps maintains its cleanliness and freshness over time. Measuring in at 16"H by 17"W by 17"T, it's the perfect little holiday hideaway for your pet.

Pick yours up directly from Prima Dog's US site for $99.

Wags & Kisses,
The Barkistas

p.s. If you're as fascinated by the nanotechnology as we are, but don't want to invest in a holiday themed bed, check out their other more affordable but still adorable options (we love the whale!).

Crate & Barrel Herringbone Dog Ornaments

Well, with Halloween out of the way, it's time to start thinking about the holidays!

Okay, maybe not... but it's kind of hard to ignore them, especially when your local Duane Reade (aka pharmacy for all of you non-NYC'ers) starts putting out the holiday decorations on November 1st. While we are going to try and pace ourselves and not dive right into making popcorn garlands and paper snowflakes, we can't help but start picking up a few things here and there....

After all, if you don't get them now, they'll be gone in a few weeks when you want them-- right? And how can you say no to this adorable set of Herringbone Dog Ornaments? Each set contains four festively dressed Fidos, ready to look cute while guarding your tree. Pick them up now from Crate & Barrel for $27.95.

Puppy Pedometer

Curious about how much ground your dog covers in a week?

Well, now you can add it up with this cute pedometer for your pup from the French company Pylones! Simply clip it to Fido's collar and adjust the calculator's setting for your dog's size, and you're good to go. Perfect for making walks a little bit more fun, and for ensuring your doggy (and you!) are getting their weekly quota of exercise. Oh, and did we mention it's absolutely adorable?

Fidele Fashions

Here at Barkzilla, we believe you should never feel guilty about dressing your dog up, especially if it's in a beautiful custom created gown like this one!

We fell in love with this gorgeous doggie couture from Fidele as soon as we saw it. While it comes with a pretty serious price tag ($137), it's perfect for your pooch's red carpet moment or special occasion. Like every Fidele dress, their Royal Orchid gown is handmade to order. Based in Thailand, the company was founded by a passionate Thai-American vet in January 2010 and donates 5% of its profits to local animal shelters that help abused or abandoned animals.

Stunning fashion for "paws"-- how can you not love it?

Stuff We Love: Super Cudgie

At the end of the day, sometimes all you want to do is cuddle up....

Which, is exactly what Arabella & Fern's Super Cudgie is designed for. Available in two sizes (regular and extra snuggly) and a whole lot of gorgeous patterns and textures, they're finished with a chic cord trim and machine washable.

We checked out the Klondike blanket (we're suckers for faux fur), and so far-- it's a new Barkzilla favorite. Perfect as a crate or travel blanket, we've been using ours as a couch cover. Large enough for Paddy to snuggle up in, but small enough that it doesn't take up too much space, we love how chi chi it looks on our couch.

The perfect luxe gift for the Barkista in your life, the Super Cudgie is available from their website; the small retails for $46 and the large $80.

Seriously, we hope the awesome Arabella & Fern team consider making a human version...

Trixie & Peanut Doggie Designer Sale!

Very few things make us as excited as a good sample sale!

Trixe & Peanut's bi-annual Doggie Designer Sample Sale is DEFINITELY something that should be on any responsible Barkista's calendar.

From October 15th thru the 17th, this posh purveyor of puppy accessories and attire will be offering up to 60% off of merchandise from brands like Ella Dish, and Haute Diggity Dog. While it can be a little bit of a madhouse, it's totally worth it-- in the past we've scored great deals on winter coats and carriers. Our advice is to go early during the sale and make sure to bring your pup for sizing as all sale items are non-returnable.

A must for any bargain hunting hounds and their owners.

Nootie Germ-Fighting Shampoo & Daily Spritz

Sunday is normally bath day Chez Barkzilla, but after a busy weekend visiting the "Grandparents," we were both a little tuckered out for our usual full doggie day spa routine. What better time to try out Nootie's new Germ-Fighting Shampoo and Daily Spritz in Coconut Lime Verbena!

That's right: their innovative two-in one packaging features 12 oz of shampoo on one end and 4 oz of refreshing in-between bath spritz on the other (or alternatively, pick them in full size bottles as seen to the right). We personally prefer the combo pack as you get a little bit of both fabulous products, and they snap together for easy storage.

The Germ-Fighting Shampoo and Daily Spritz is the newest addition to Nootie's line of cruelty-free grooming products which are made in the USA and use all-natural ingredients. The formula contains grapefruit seed which is hypoallergenic and helps to "prevent against a variety of bacteria, viruses, and infections, contributes to the prevention of mange and fleas when used on animals". Both the shampoo and spritz are tearless, non-toxic, and free from from triclosan and parabens. With cold and flu season right around the corner, we love the extra germ-fighting power Nootie has infused its products with (seriously, it is not okay to cough/sneeze and then pet my dog...).

While we have yet to test-drive the shampoo, we're big fans of the Daily Spritz which helps to refresh and moisturize your pup's coat. The Coconut Lime Verbena scent smells like a clean fruity cocktail; sweet but definitely not sickly so. And, unlike other spray baths we've tried (which are mostly focused on masking smells), when we ran our hands through Paddy's fur after a spray and brush we really felt that her hair was cleaner.

The set retails for a reasonable $20, which considering you're getting both a spray bath and shampoo, is a pretty solid deal. Find out where to pick up your Nootie Germ-Fighting Shampoo and Daily Spritz directly from their website!

Arabella & Fern's Cuddle Up Pup

Recently we were introduced to the company Arabella & Fern, which makes incredibly stylish, well-thought out products for your pup. In addition to producing beautiful goodies for your anipal, the company donates 5% of each purchase to the ASPCA. Seriously. They rock.

Anyway, a friend of ours is expecting a little fury bundle of joy later this month, and we immediately thought of her when we saw their Cuddle Up Pup set.

Including everything you need to help your puppy adjust to their new home: the Cuddle Up Pup features a small snuggle blanket, rope toy, non-toxic microwaveable "Woof Warmer", and a battery operated heartbeat pillow. Perfect for helping to crate train your puppy, or solo time, the Cuddle Up Pup is designed to replicate the sensations that soothe and make your puppy feel secure.

And even better, Arabella & Fern offer this set in a variety of chic coordinated colors and patterns. Our picks are the pink paisley "Lady" pattern (for girls, obvi), and the cute blue "Sparks" doggy print (for the dudes).

Made in the USA, the Cuddle Up Pup retails for $49.95 directly from their site, AND, the awesome gals at Araballa & Fern have created an EXCLUSIVE discount for Barkzilla readers! Get 20% off one item with code BARKZ! While you're there, check out their other beautifully designed products-- I wonder if they make Super Cudgies for humans...

Pretty in the City!

As you may have read last week here on Barkzilla, Paddy just scored her first shoot! In preparation for the BIG DAY, we got her ready with a quick bath courtesy of the fine folks at Pet Head. This luxury grooming line, which is all across America, Australia, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, offers products customized for the specific needs of your pampered pup. With adorably packaged products for everything from sensitive skin to a quick-rinse formula that's perfect for the doggy who just doesn't have time to sit still-- every one of them will leave your Fido smelling clean and feeling refreshed!

While Paddy behaves herself at bath time, she can be a little squirmy (especially when it comes to taking care of the face area) so we tested the Fears for Tears tearless shampoo. Containing NO harsh chemicals, it's hypo-allergenic and contains Shea Butter and Sunflower Oil for silky smooth hair and healthy skin, all of the Pet Head line are paraben, sulfate, DEA and cruelty free!

After warming up the "tub", we uncapped our shampoo. Once you remove the bone shaped protective cover, the packaging features a water bottle style nozzle that makes it easy to apply shampoo and reseal. Upon opening, the first thing that we noticed was the FABULOUS scent. (Seriously, if they don't make this scent for humans, we may have to use the dog shampoo.) Apply to wet fur and lather it up! Unlike other products we've tried, a little went a long way to creating luxurious suds. A quick rinse down and Paddy was good to go!

Shh. Don't tell Paddy we posted this pic-- she'd be so embarrassed!

After a quick towel off and some primping, we had one clean FANTASTIC smelling and silky looking Morkie-- seriously, check out that glamour shot!

Get more info about Pet Head's products and where to pick them up on their website at www.pethead.com. Prices vary depending on the retailing location-- but we saw some pretty good deals online and at Amazon.com.
