P.L.A.Y. Eco-Friendly Ultra Chill Pad

Dude. It has been one hot summer, and so far there's no evidence that the mercury is going to drop any time soon. When we first heard about PLAY's new eco-friendly Chill Pads we had a minor freak out: memories of last summer's misadventures with the Cocojour Cooling Pad came rushing back.

Fortunately-- when PLAY says "chill," they mean it in the, "let's hang out because you're cool"-way not in the "hang out with me and I'll lower your body temperature"-sense. Phew. Meltdown avoided.

Made from ultra-fine plush and featuring a faux-suede bottom, the Chill Pad is designed to allow your pet to relax in a temperate state. Breathable and light weight, they're perfect for throwing in the back of the car or taking along to the next picnic to let your pooch recline in style. Machine washable, and filled with eco-friendly materials, they also come in an incredibly stylish array of colors (see above).

Pick yours up starting August 8th from PLAY's website, starting at $29 for the extra small Chill Pad.

Wags for Wellness, NYC - Saturday August 6th

What could be more fun than spending a summer afternoon with your pup and fellow dog-lovers for a good cause? Pawgua has teamed up with some of our favorite people (The Salty Paw and Andrea Arden to name two!) to help raise awareness about the benefits of proper hydration an exercise for dogs (and their owners... cough).
Oh, and if the good cause wasn't enough to get you motivated, there will be fun and games! In addition to a kickoff at The Salty Paw (located at the South Street Seaport at Peck Slip), Andrea Arden will be on hand at the "After Pawty," which will also include treats, refreshments and raffle prizes. Doggies will also walk away with goodie bags!

The walk will take place on August 13th and kickoff at 11 AM. Participants will walk roughly 2 miles across the Brooklyn Bridge (which is something that we still have yet to do after living in the city for over 4 years... shocking I know). Pre-event registration is $20 per dog and $30 the day of. All proceeds are going to The Animal Medical Center and Animal Haven Shelter.

Date: August 13th, 2011
Time: 11 AM - 12 PM (start your walk!)
Registration: $20 per dog in advance, $30 per dog day of. Register online here.
Location: The Salty Paw, 38 Peck Slip at the South Street Seaport

Dogs at Play Stationery

Ok, so Anthropologie is totally at fault for getting us hooked on Galison's adorable paper products. As I may have mentioned, we may or may not have a small stationery hoarding issue here...

Regardless, while digging around on the Galison website we discovered these adorable doggy notebooks and notecards! So haul worthy...

Snag these Dogs at Play Notecards for $10 and make your correspondence that much cuter.

The adorable doggies on the cover of the Dogs at Play Journal will keep all of your important secrets safe for just $8.

Tea Time, Honest Kitchen Style!

Since we've started this blog, we've seen some crazy stuff. We have to confess, that when we first heard about the Honest Kitchen's teas for pets, we were a little bit skeptical. Really? I'm going to brew tea for my dog? Well, yep. That's the idea, and that's exactly what we did.

The kind folks over at HK were generous enough to send us some to try, so this weekend we brewed up a little of HK's Quiet Tea™, which "is designed to help promote calmness and alleviate anxiety, tension and excitability during stressful of over-stimulating situations caused by factors such as separation, thunderstorms, travel, or events."

Hot Dog Leash

Crafted from plastic sausage links and high quality nylon rope, this 42" long leash is a must for any "hot dog."
Harty har har.

Anyway, bad jokes aside (I mean come on, how could we resist?), pick yours up from Fred Flare ($20).

petcentric's Friend Fetcher

Oh my dog. You MUST check out Purina's petcentric Friend Fetcher immediately! 118 adorable pups are waiting to tell you in their OWN words why they'd make a fantastic furry addition to your life. In addition to being possibly the best web distraction we've discovered this week (and down right hilarious).

Our favorite digital doggies? The Australian Terrier, the Golden Retriever and the Yorkie of course!

What are yours?

Nerd Sidebar: Once you click on a dog, there is no way to go back to select another dog to listen to. You have to click the Friend Fetcher logo in the upper left corner to open up a new window. Annoying, but c'est la vie. Also, you cannot generate direct links to specific breeds. Boo.

PaperGirl Designs Goes Doggy

In addition to cupcakes, all things doggy, and makeup, the Barkistas are kind of obsessed with paper goods. Stationery, cute little notepads, erasers, pencils, wrapping paper, etc. In fact, it's not uncommon for us to buy them and never get around to using them (seriously, we may have a problem)... Thus, we were so chuffed when we got an email from Carolyn about her company Paper Girl Designs which combines 2 things we love: dogs and wrapping paper!

Each 18 x 24 single-sided sheet sells for $3. Or pick up a set of 4 assorted designs for $10.

In addition to wrapping paper, check out their cute doggy themed wrapping sets for $39 which include:

4 sheets of assorted wrapping paper.
1 set of 6 assorted blank greeting cards 6x4.25.
1 set of 6 assorted blank greeting cards 4x2.
1 set of 6 assorted gift tags.

*Each item listed above can also be purchased individually.

Can't wait until we can find an excuse to add all of the above to our paper goods/stationery stash...

Frosty Paws Frozen Bites

While roaming the aisles of our local supermarket out in the 'burbs, we stumbled upon this new product in the freezer section. It looks like the folks over at Purina have taken bite-size pieces of their Frosty Paws formula and coated with a vanilla bean flavored shell.

Though there was no info about these Frosty Paws bites on their website or Facebook page (this drives us a little bit cuckoo...), we have reason to believe that they may be a new release for summer! No word on whether they're part of a limited run or ongoing.

Regardless -- the most important question, what did our Chief Barkzilla Taster think?

A picture says a thousand words, no?

#ThursdayBling: Paw for a Cause

What makes #ThursdayBling even more fabulous? #ThursdayBling that's for a great cause! The net proceeds from the sale of these London Jewelers' bracelets all go to help build humane, no-kill shelters providing spay and neutering services in Alabama

Pick yours up from London Jewelers locations or from their website-- the basic sterling silver retails for $65, while the diamond adorned sterling silver paw is $95 (why not spring for the bling?).

Hydration for Hounds: Freezy Pups

Having a dog in an urban environment in summer has made us aware of how hard it can be to keep your pup cool when the sidewalks are scorching, trees are non-existent, and water bowls are few and far-between. Thus, we decided to seek out the best products on the market that make it easy (and fun!) to quench your pooch's thirst.

Welcome to the first post in our 2011 Summer Hydration Series, which has been renamed-- Hydration for Hounds (HfH)!

For our first 2011 HfH post, we checked out the Freezy Pups Kit, which allows you to create delicious frozen treats for your dog.* The kit comes with everything you need-- simply add water! Made from human-grade, organic ingredients, each mix is wheat, corn, soy and gluten free and does not contain artificial colors or preservatives. There are four flavors to choose from-- White Cheddar Cheese, Sweet Potato n' Maple, Juicy Apple and Chicken Soup.

We chose the Chicken Soup flavor to help our pups cool off this past weekend. Simply mix the packette with warm water, pour it into the mold, pop it into the freezer, and BAM-- delicious frozen treats with less than 4 calories each (!!).

So, what did our Barkzilla Chief Taster think? Just take a look at that snapshot above--

In addition to feeding Freezy Pups straight out of the freezer, you can also melt them and add them to your dogs kibble for a little extra flavor.

Freezy Pups are available directly from their website--  the best deal by far is the Kit which includes 1 of each of the 4 mixes (each makes 1 tray) and the ice cube maker for $19.99. After your pup has had a chance to try the sampler set, stock up on refills of their favorite flavor cost $8.99 and will make 70 pops.

We hope you like the first of our 2011 Summer Hydration for Hounds posts-- let us know in the comments what you think (and if you like the name!). Would also love to hear about any hydration products you'd like us to check out.

Stay frosty :)

* We've seen an email and numerous posts online regarding the topic of ice and bloat in dogs. After doing some research online, we stumbled upon this well-written post by Dr. Patty Khuly which debunks this internet myth. That being said, we invite you to read her post, and make your own choices :)

Samples were provided by PR for review. Please see our disclaimer for more information.

Happy Birthday Paddy!

Two holidays in one week? Yup! It's Paddington's 4th birthday!

This year we celebrated on the 4th of July (got to take advantage of those fireworks, obvi), but figured we should still put up a birthday post :) Can't believe that Paddy's been a part of our lives for four years-- in fact, we can't remember what life was like before her... a life where we knew nothing about things like interviewing for doggy daycare or bottled water for dogs... All we can say is, we wouldn't have it any other way.

Wags & Kisses,

Aroo Studio Chirp ID Tag

Even though we're dog people, the Barkistas have a thing for birds. We recently picked up these adorable sparrow and birdhouse key chains from the Thai design house, Qualy*:

While our original idea was to get a third birdie and hang Paddington's leash and harness from it, we realized that our plan probably wasn't practical (surprisingly, the leash is kind of heavy). So the next best thing for completing our birdie theme? This cute "Chip" ID tag from Aroo Studio:

Made from aluminum, the bird measures 1 3/8" from beak to tail feather and 1/2" wide, and can be customized with a variety of fonts and icons.

Available from Aroo Studio's website for $32.

*Unfotch, we have yet to find a US distributor for these keychains and had to order ours (and some bunny shaped desk accessories) from a UK website. Though it cost a pretty penny for the shipping, totally worth it-- you have to admit, they're pretty darn cute. Curious about where to get your own? Head over to Qualy's Facebook page and check out their wall, they're also very quick to respond to questions! While you're there, take a look at their other products-- just about everything they sell is ADORABLE-- you have been warned.
