It's not often that you actually receive an email about the post office in your inbox...

Sidebar: Holy moly, last time I mailed letter, I'm pretty sure the cost of a stamp was like 29 cents...

Anyway, check out these cute stamps from the U.S. Postal Service which celebrate "Dogs at Work," and are good for sticking on First-Class Mail (up to 2-ounces) and "square greeting cards subject to additional postage because of their shape."

Each design was created by John M. Thompson, who painted each of the subjects based off of photographs he had taken.

Our favorite has to be the Welsh springer spaniel therapy dog as we recently passed our Delta Society certification exam!

Greetings Barkistas! As you may or may not know, we love to whip up treats for our favorite Barkista and are always looking for new pet-friendly dishes. Just in time for home stretch of holiday baking, we've got a recipe from Lucy Postins, CEO of The Honest Kitchen and dog cookbook author! These yummy treats are sure to please and include cranberries, which are good for pets prone to urinary tract infections

THE HONEST KITCHEN BUTTERNUT BITES RECIPE
ingredients
o   1 cup boiled and mashed butternut squash (You could substitute mashed
o   pumpkin or sweet potatoes if you don’t have butternut squash available.)
o   1½ cup uncooked oatmeal
o   ¼ cup dried cranberries
o   1 tsp nutritional yeast
o   1 tbsp honey

what to do
1. Preheat the oven to 370°F and butter a large cookie sheet.
2. Combine the cooked, mashed butternut squash with the oatmeal, cranberries,
yeast and honey.
3. Mix well so that all the ingredients are very thoroughly combined.
4. Using a teaspoon, scoop small balls on to the buttered cookie sheet.
5. Make sure they are evenly spaced out about 1 inch apart and bake for about
10 to 12 minutes.
6. Allow the bites to cool, and then add these nutritious goodies to your dog’s
usual meal or serve them as individual treats!

Healthy Holiday Eating Q&A with Lucy Postins

As we all know, the holidays are a time for family and food. However, in addition to the no-no's we're all familiar with (raisins, chocolate, etc.), there are some other holiday feast dishes that should NOT be shared with your doggy. We had the chance to chat with Lucy Postins, CEO of The Honest Kitchen and author of Made of Love, a cookbook filled with healthy recipes for dogs, who gave us the dish on what your pup can safely stomach.

In addition to the "no-no" foods that we already know of, what other seasonal items do we need to keep an eye out for?

Stuffing and corn pudding –should be avoided for most pets, because they tend to contain onion and sometimes raisins, as well as ingredients like bread and cornmeal which aren’t very nutritious and can actually exacerbate ear infections and skin problems.

Desserts and cheeses should be avoided too, because they can cause tummy upsets, especially when eaten in excess.

Relishes, pickles and sauces are also best left out of your pet’s bowl because they tend to contain heavy spices, sugar, onion and other ingredients than can unsettle their GI tract.

The following foods are toxic to dogs and cats and should not be offered in the form of leftovers or people-food additions to her usual meals: onions, chocolate, macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins & candies containing the sweetened xylitol. Also, never feed your dog as cooked bone!

What left-overs are suitable to be shared with your dog?

Turkey, Ham, Prime Rib and other meats. These can all be added to your dog’s food in moderation. The key things to remember are that dogs should never be fed any type of cooked bones because they can splinter and damage or impact the GI tract. Too much fat and gristle can be problematic and can lead to pancreatitis, which is very painful and potentially dangerous. Try to avoid prepared meats that have added lots of added sodium, nitrites and preservatives. Whenever you can, choose free-range, natural and grass-fed meats, which are better for you and your pet as well as the animal who provided the meat in the first place.

Sweet Potatoes are an excellent source of beta carotene and make a highly nutritious meal addition for dogs. Steamed or baked sweet potatoes are ideal; raw root vegetables can be difficult to digest unless completely pulverized in a blender or food processor. Avoid giving your dog the kind of holiday-themed sweet potato side dishes that contain lots of maple syrup, melted marshmallows or candied nuts.

Cranberries are a great addition to your pet’s meals at any time of year and especially during the holidays. Many dogs enjoy fresh cranberries but cranberry sauce and jelly can be full of sugar and other ingredients that Fido doesn’t need. Dried cranberries are a nice alternative, provided they don’t have lots of added sweeteners. Cranberries contain natural compounds that can help prevent bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall, so they are an excellent choice for cats and dogs who are prone to urinary tract infections.

Pumpkin & Squash are great foods to share with cats and dogs in moderate amounts. Most pets love the taste of these nutritious, fibrous vegetables. If you’re making a soup, consider setting aside some of the gently cooked cubes of squash before you begin adding wine, cream, onions and other less pet-friendly ingredients to the mix.

Winter Greens like chard and kale are a super source of vitamins and antioxidants. Brussels sprouts and cabbage are also loaded with nutrients, but they tend to cause gas. These can be added raw, lightly steamed or sautéed. Avoid serving your pet large amounts of winter greens that contain lots of added salt, wine, soy-sauce or butter.

White potatoes are fine in moderate amounts. They contain fiber and minerals. Try to avoid serving your pet potato dishes that are prepared with lots of cream, ranch dressing, oil or butter. Potatoes provide a good source of Vitamins B3 and B6, Vitamin C, Potassium, Iron, Copper and Fiber. Potatoes have been associated with some adverse publicity in the past due to their content of glycoalkaloids, which can develop in the stems, shoots and green parts of the skin of potatoes that are improperly stored and where the skin is subjected to excessive or prolonged exposure to light. The shoots and green parts of potatoes should not be consumed by people or animals for this reason and should be removed before serving.

If you are sharing leftovers with your dog, what's the best way to figure out the correct portion size?
A good rule of thumb is about 10% of your pets’ meal. A balanced topper is about half meat, and the other half vegetables and/or grains.

This weekend we received the most wonderful gift we have ever been given-- this beautiful hand-drawn portrait of Paddington by New York City based artist Jordan Spilman. Hello!? Are you seeing this?! We can't get over how he managed to capture the essence of our chief Barkista on paper.

A graduate of the Glasgow School of Art, Jordan hails originally from the UK. He is a trained painter and sculptor but has a real love of portraiture (both people and pets). Not being allowed to have animals as a child, has made him love them even more, and is probably why he is able to capture their character so well on paper. His pet portraits in particular have become sought after both in the United States and back home in the UK as essential collectibles for all animal lovers.

Lend a Helping Paw This Veteran's Day

This Veteran's Day, help those who have served by giving back to the organization America's VetDogs by participating in Bil-Jac's Facebook campaign! For every fan added to the Bil-Jac Facebook page through November 30th 2011, Bil-Jac will be donating a dollar to America's VetDogs.

This is an amazing non-profit which serves disabled veterans and military personnel across the country and overseas. Created by the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, it has been helping veterans since 1946 by providing guide and service dogs to those who have honorably and bravely served our country.

This past month, we got a very special birthday surprise -- that's right, Paddington became the proud owner of her very own Louis Vuitton leash. (Note: The dog is fast becoming the owner of the most designer items in this household... disturbing, we know).

M&J Doggy Spa Day!

After this weekend's freak winter weather, Miss. Morkie was badly in need for a bath after a rather wet stroll through Central Park. Fortunately, this was just the excuse we needed to try out some goodies from M&J Dog Essentials!

Paddy's afternoon at the Doggy Day Spa (aka our kitchen sink) started with a deep tissue massage and application of the Nutrient Fusion Pre-Bath Treatment. Designed to help relieve itchy skin, it's formulated to help break loose dirt and debris to make shampooing more effective. We applied it on Paddy's dry coat and massaged it into her hair while we warmed her bath water.

After 10 minutes of waiting patiently, she was ready to get into the tub! Next, we soaped her up with M&J's Natural Dog Shampoo which thanks to honeysuckle extract smells fabulous. This PH-balanced shampoo is low-sudsing and sulfate-free (so good for sensitive skin), and also contains plantain extract and camellia oil for fur that's soft and shiny. Ooh la la!

The finished product?

I'm so clean and cuddly!

Not only did Paddy smell great (without being overpoweringly perfumed), but her hair was super glossy and soft. We're also super pleased that the combo of the pre-bath treatment and the shampoo seemed to have helped with some early-winter itchiness. Yay!

With Halloween right around the corner, we've got a post on the scariest thing we could think of: FLEAS.

EEEE!

Though we like to think of ourselves as pretty seasoned when it comes to doggy ailments and issues, nothing makes our skin crawl like the thought of fleas! Fortunately, we had the opportunity to chat with Dr. Lynn Buzhardt, who's leading flea education on behalf of Novartis Animal Health/Sentinel's new flea prevention program.

What are the tell-tale signs that my dog has fleas?
There are several ways to tell your dog has fleas. You may actually see an adult flea on your dog’s coat, especially if your dog has light-colored or short fur. Fleas tend to stay close to the skin and scurry around a lot. Adult fleas are often found over the lower back, around the face and under the belly.

If you don’t spy an adult flea, however, it doesn’t mean your dog is flea-free. You may find evidence elsewhere that fleas have invaded. Fleas consume your pet’s blood for a meal, and eliminate the digested blood (i.e., flea poop) on the coat. Digested blood will appear as tiny black specks. To confirm that these specks are dried blood, place a few on a damp paper towel. When moistened, the dried blood will turn from black to brownish-red.

In addition to suffering itchy discomfort, some pets can become allergic to flea saliva and develop flea allergy dermatitis, the most common skin disease in dogs. In severe cases, a pet may even become anemic from blood loss. Some fleas may also carry tapeworm eggs that can infect a pet if accidentally swallowed by the pet while grooming itself.

If my dog has a flea bite, does this mean we've got an infestation?
Although one flea bite does not always mean you have a flea infestation, remember that adult fleas reproduce rapidly, so an infestation may not be far off. An adult female flea can lay up to 2,000 eggs during her lifetime. (Barzkilla Note: EWWW!) As soon as adult fleas take a blood meal from your pet, they are ready to reproduce. If there are adult fleas on your dog, you may safely assume that you have a potential infestation in your home. By the time you see one flea, you could have already spent months living with an infestation of eggs and maggot-like larvae. Visible adult fleas represent only 5 percent of the flea population. The other 95 percent hide in your home in the form of eggs, maggot-like larvae and pupae. Eggs and larvae are usually found in areas where the dog rests, such as your sofa, bed or rugs. To prevent flea infestations, fleas must be controlled in the home as well as on the dog.

What's the best way to get rid of fleas?
The best way to rid your home of fleas is to use a dual approach. Contact a professional exterminator about treating the premises. In-home extermination should focus on upholstered furniture, rugs and carpeting. Vacuum all floors prior to home treatment and check with your professional exterminator to see when it is best to vacuum following the treatment. If your pet sleeps in your bed, wash sheets and pillowcases in hot water and regular laundry detergent. Vacuum the mattress and consider buying new pillows.

Be sure to treat the dog’s environment outside as well. Remove underbrush from trees and rake leaves where fleas and ticks lurk. When spraying the yard for fleas, concentrate on the areas where your pet spends most of his time. Eggs and larvae will likely be shed in the spots where he lies down.

Speak to your veterinarian about treating your pet. Your pet’s doctor will prescribe medications to kill the adult fleas and to break the flea’s life cycle, thus preventing future generations of fleas. Use an insect growth regulator (IGR) such as SENTINEL® (milbemycin oxime/lufenuron) Flavor Tabs® to stop future stages of the flea life cycle. Be sure to read the label carefully before administering.

Can my dog get fleas all year round?
Waiting too long to use preventive treatments before flea and tick season comes around could be dangerous for your dog. Fleas are very hardy parasites and can survive climate extremes. While they prefer warm, humid environments, they can endure dry, hot summers and cold, wet winters. Fleas can go 100 days without a meal. A monthly tablet like SENTINEL Flavor Tabs combines flea prevention with heartworm and internal parasite protection, offering an easy way to keep your pet and home safe year-round.

These Flowers Are A-DOG-Able

Last week we got two very special birthday surprises:

That's right-- these two adorable pups crafted from flowers showed up on our doorstep! On the left, we have the Witchy-Pooch and on the right, the a-DOG-able for Fall. Made out of white carnations and surrounded by fall foliage and flowers, they're both pretty sizeable as you can see below.

We were really pleased with the quality too-- five days later and our flowers are still looking fresh and lovely!

NOse Offense = No More Unwanted Smells!

We've been loving the gorgeous fall weather in NYC! Sunshine, a cool breeze-- what else could a gal and her pup ask for? While it's been very pleasant during the day, it's been getting a little chilly at night, and with the windows closed, we've been noticing some new scents... Ah eau de dog bed...

Though we're diligent about cleaning Paddy's dog beds on a regular basis (please note the plural: dog BEDS), sometimes before we have guests over we like to spruce things up. Let's be honest, if they're that way for us-- can't imagine how intense it must be for Paddy's sensitive nose. A lot of spray/air-freshening products can also contain a slew of not-so pet-friendly chemicals. BOO.

Compiled by the wonderful Wade Rouse, this collection of witty stories from some of America's top humorists, this book hits the spot-- and by the spot we mean the funny bone.

Doesn't the cover just crack you up?

So many of the anecdotes or lessons shared in this collection are funny because THEY ARE TRUE. Perhaps a little too true, though we did find it reassuring to know that we're not the only folks out there that have blessed their dog with an imaginary voice. (Albeit, one that is really, really annoying to anyone except for the residents of our apartment...)

A great read for those with a commute, the stories are sweet and funny without going the soppy route. Be warned: You will laugh out-loud. Strangers on the subway may look at you funny.

Pet-envy (noun): A feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by one's pet's possessions, qualities, or luck.

Out of the many products we've test driven, the Arabella and Fern Super Cudgie is paws down one of our favorites to this day. Seriously, it's a little piece of luxury, and we kind of wish there was a human-sized version available.

Thus, when we spied the new Klondike Bed over on their site we had a moment of sheer pet-envy: a bed made out of soft, cuddly Klondike material!? OMG, please stop!

This machine-washable doughnut bed comes in two-sizes (small and medium, large is on its way!), and is made in the USA. While there is a pretty penny involved ($160 for the smaller bed, $180 for the medium), this is like the Rolls-Royce of dog beds.

Today's little earthquake was a good reminder that natural disasters often happen when you're least expecting them. We were a little shaken (and stirred, haha... OK, not funny), and fortunately escaped harm's way this afternoon.

However, it did get us thinking about how we could be better prepared in the future if we found ourselves in the midst of another natural disaster. The folks over at the ASPCA have pulled together a list of the items you should have stashed away in an "Evac Pack" for your pet. Their list is a REALLY ambitious: come on, 7 days worth of boiled water?! We live in New York... my closet space will make you cry...

Anyway, that being said, working off of the ASPCA's list (which you can see here), here are our city-friendly suggestions for your pooch's emergency bag:

3 days' worth of canned (pop-top) or dry food (be sure to rotate every two months)
Disinfectant
Disposable garbage bags for clean-up
Bowl
Extra collar or harness as well as an extra leash
Photocopies of medical records + a few days worth of any medication your pet may need
1 really large bottle of water (store in a cool, dry place and replace every two months)
Flashlight
Blanket

There is really nothing we love more than people doing what they're passionate about, which is why we were so stoked to get an email from Jed Crowley- a filmmaker at Columbia University who has just completed his first film! Pound Puppies!

Remember Pound Puppies? I wish we did, but sadly, like Cabbage Patch Kids, we kind of missed out on the peak of the madness. Yep. Not to date ourselves or anything, but we missed out on all the fun things in the mid-80's by one or two years. Oddly enough though, we still remember the themes song from the commercials... whoa. Anyway... we digress.

Good news: there's still time for us to jump on the cuteness bandwagon, because... they're BAAAACCCKKK!!

That's right, starting on August 13th, the Pound Puppies are bringing their mission to find "A pup for every person and a person for every pup," to The Hub.*

Starring the voice talent of Eric McCormack (you may recognize him from Will & Grace, or my personal favorite, the made-for-Lifetime movie "Who is Clark Rockefeller?"), each episode features the Pound Puppy gang on the hunt for good homes for pups in needs. Possibly a little too family friendly for older viewers, but hey-- come on... with all the ugly stuff going on the world, why not indulge in a little G-rated fun?

Wags for Wellness, NYC - Saturday August 6th

What could be more fun than spending a summer afternoon with your pup and fellow dog-lovers for a good cause? Pawgua has teamed up with some of our favorite people (The Salty Paw and Andrea Arden to name two!) to help raise awareness about the benefits of proper hydration an exercise for dogs (and their owners... cough).

Oh, and if the good cause wasn't enough to get you motivated, there will be fun and games! In addition to a kickoff at The Salty Paw (located at the South Street Seaport at Peck Slip), Andrea Arden will be on hand at the "After Pawty," which will also include treats, refreshments and raffle prizes. Doggies will also walk away with goodie bags!

The walk will take place on August 13th and kickoff at 11 AM. Participants will walk roughly 2 miles across the Brooklyn Bridge (which is something that we still have yet to do after living in the city for over 4 years... shocking I know). Tea Time, Honest Kitchen Style!

Since we've started this blog, we've seen some crazy stuff. We have to confess, that when we first heard about the Honest Kitchen's teas for pets, we were a little bit skeptical. Really? I'm going to brew tea for my dog? Well, yep. That's the idea, and that's exactly what we did.

The kind folks over at HK were generous enough to send us some to try, so this weekend we brewed up a little of HK's Quiet Tea™, which "is designed to help promote calmness and alleviate anxiety, tension and excitability during stressful of over-stimulating situations caused by factors such as separation, thunderstorms, travel, or events."

The name "tea" can be a little misleading, as this formula only contains Oatstraw, Chamomile, Passionflower, Skullcap and Valerian root (remember, caffeine BAD for dogs). It can be served to your pup with food or on its own, which was the route we went.

Getting Paddy to drink the tea was a little bit of a challenge: not only is she a picky eater, but she has an incredibly selective attention span.

After giving her a few licks from our fingers, she took one or two laps before heading off to watch TV. Did it work? Well, it's kind of hard to tell. We're not sure she actually ingested enough tea for it to have the desired effect. That being said, variety is the spice of life, and we think she liked having an other beverage option besides water added to her diet.

Frosty Paws Frozen Bites

While roaming the aisles of our local supermarket out in the 'burbs, we stumbled upon this new product in the freezer section. It looks like the folks over at Purina have taken bite-size pieces of their Frosty Paws formula and coated with a vanilla bean flavored shell.

Though there was no info about these Frosty Paws bites on their website or Facebook page (this drives us a little bit cuckoo...), we have reason to believe that they may be a new release for summer! No word on whether they're part of a limited run or ongoing.

Having a dog in an urban environment in summer has made us aware of how hard it can be to keep your pup cool when the sidewalks are scorching, trees are non-existent, and water bowls are few and far-between. Thus, we decided to seek out the best products on the market that make it easy (and fun!) to quench your pooch's thirst.

Welcome to the first post in our 2011 Summer Hydration Series, which has been renamed-- Hydration for Hounds (HfH)!

Even though we're dog people, the Barkistas have a thing for birds. We recently picked up these adorable sparrow and birdhouse key chains from the Thai design house, Qualy*:

While our original idea was to get a third birdie and hang Paddington's leash and harness from it, we realized that our plan probably wasn't practical (surprisingly, the leash is kind of heavy). So the next best thing for completing our birdie theme? This cute "Chip" ID tag from Aroo Studio:

Passports for Pets?

So, this past week while we were traveling, we got to thinking, wouldn't it be fun if pets had passports? We couldn't help but giggle at the thought of a customs agent (specifically the surly one we had...) stamping Paddington's imaginary passport.

After a quick Google search, we failed to spot any such items on the market. Several pet travel document holders, but nothing as much fun as a Puppy Passport. (Or hello, how much fun would a pet travel document holder DECORATED like a passport be?) So, all of you pet entrepreneurs-- get on it! That's a free one from us here at Barkzilla :)

From Memorial Day through July 4th Explore.org, The Annenberg Foundation and the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America are joining forces as part of a campaign called "Dog Bless You," which pairs veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with service dogs to help them on the road to recovery.

"This campaign is to channel the energy of the dog community into the gift of unconditional love and healing that only a canine can provide. It's finally here! After stalking it for MONTHS, we finally found the LeSportsac "My Buddy" print on their website. Seriously, we've been looking for it since we spotted a pencil case in the print in a magazine in March*. Available in a variety of different bag styles, it's just adorable.

While we love the dog carrier ($98), as of now we're leaning towards the "Paula" wristlet ($32): it's the perfect sizing for stashing a few dollars, treats and a cellphone for our evening walks, and it looks like we could clip it to our leash. The nice thing about all of LeSportsac's products (in our experience) is that the bags on their own are relatively light weight and easy to store.

So recently we've been a little radio silent because we've been in the processing of moving. Seriously? Never again. Also, on a total sidebar, somehow the dog had more boxes than we had dinner plates.... Anyway, now that we're settled into our new digs, we can blog away again!
